3D Imaging
(ConeBeam CT)

We are excited to offer one of the most advanced imaging techniques in dentistry: ConeBeam CT scanning, or CBCT/ 3D imaging. This  allows us to create virtually 3 dimensional views of your teeth, face with just one scan. We can obtain high-quality, detailed information to diagnose and plan your treatment needs, to evaluate your teeth and jaw structures from literally every angle. Routine x-rays, on the other hand, produce a single flat/2D image with limited information. The CBC CT imaging system is a digital x-ray scanner that rotates once around your head while you stand or sit. The process is quick, simple, and completely painless. The scans produce images similar to CT  scans, but use far less radiation. The applications in dentistry are limitless. We use these scans to provide the best treatment in dental implants, root canals, diagnosis of dental and facial pain, etc.

Common uses for the dental Conebeam CT scan include:

-  Planning for placement dental implants.
-  Planning some cosmetic dentistry and reconstructive procedures, such as inlays, on lays, crowns and veneers.
-  Determining tooth orientation.
-  Planning for root canals and bone grafts.
-  Diagnosing temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).
-  Detecting and treating jaw tumors.
-  Prior to dental extractions

3D imaging makes it possible to plan and customize your care. You can have absolute confidence and satisfaction in the treatment you receive, knowing we've analyzed every problem with 3D technology.

OPG X-Ray

An OPG is a panoramic or X-ray, which displays all the teeth of the upper and lower jaw on a single film.  It demonstrates the number, position, and growth of all the teeth including those that have not yet erupted. It is different from the small close-up x-rays dentists take of individual teeth. It will also reveal any infection, and what lies beneath your gum line, and may also reveal problems with the jawbone such as cysts, tumours. Temporomandibular joint or TMJ can be viewed using this x-ray. An OPG may be requested for the planning of orthodontic treatment, for assessment of wisdom teeth or for a general overview of the teeth and the bone which supports the teeth.

Lateral Cephalometric X-Ray

A Lateral Cephalometric X-ray (or Lat Ceph) is an x-ray taken of the side of the face with very precise positioning so that various measurements can be made to determine the current and future relationship of the top and bottom jaw (maxilla and mandible) and therefore assess the nature of a  patient’s bite. This is particularly useful to plan any orthodontic treatment that may be necessary.

One of the biggest benefits of the lateral cephalometric x-ray is the advantage of “natural” head positioning. The lateral cephalometric x-ray uses a line known as the true vertical as an external reference point. Because the true vertical is generated by gravity and the head is in its normal positioning, a doctor or orthodontist can study the head as it would be positioned without any additional altering. This is why many refer to the lateral cephalometric x-ray as revealing the “natural” head positioning through the use of the true vertical.

How often should dental x-rays be taken?

individual dental health

Your dentist will recommend necessary x-rays based upon the review of your medical and dental history, a dental exam, signs and symptoms, your age, and risk of disease.

Full Check-ups

A full mouth series of dental x-rays is recommended for new patients. A full series is usually good for a few years. Bite-wing x-rays (x-rays of top and bottom teeth biting together) are taken (check-up).

extractions

For wisdom teeth, an OPG (orthopantomogram) is needed to examine the entire jaw. When considering orthodontics an OPG and a lateral cephalogram are also needed.
