Orthodontic Braces

Dental braces are devices used in orthodontics to correct alignment of teeth and their position with regard to bite.

If you are not happy with the way your smile looks due to misaligned or gapped teeth, orthodontic treatment is a good option to consider. Orthodontics is the dental practice of straightening and realigning teeth for maximum performance and aesthetics.

Braces are often used to correct malocclusions such as underbites, overbites, cross bites and open bites, or crooked teeth and various other flaws of teeth and jaws, whether cosmetic or structural. Orthodontic braces are often used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances to widen the palate or jaws, create spaces between teeth, or otherwise shape the teeth and jaws.

Teeth move through the use of force. The force applied by the arch wire pushes the tooth in a particular direction and a stress is created within the periodontal ligament. The modification of the periodontal blood supply determines a biological response which leads to bone remodeling, where bone is created on one side by osteoblast cells and restored on the other side by osteoclasts.

The first step:

To determine if braces are suitable for the patient. The doctor consults with the patient and inspects the teeth visually. If braces are appropriate, a record appointment is setup where X-rays, molds, and impressions are made. These records are analyzed to determine the problems and proper course of action. Typical treatment times vary from six months to six years depending on the complexity.

Dental braces are made of brackets that are bonded to the front sides of your teeth, and wires connecting the brackets. Millions of people have benefited from the proven effects of traditional braces and orthodontic dentistry. Depending on the amount of positioning your teeth need in order to correct your smile, dental braces may be your best option.
